Description
Guðmundur studied at the National Theaters Ballet School in Reykjavik from 1987 until 1991 when he moved to Stockholm to study at the Royal Swedish Ballet School. He danced with the Iceland Dance Company between the years 1993-2004 and danced in all their productions during that time, plus participating in West Side Story at The National Theatre, Kiss me Kate, Sól og Máni and Chicago at the Reykjavik City Theatre plus a few other performances. He did the choreography/movements for Móglí (Jungle Book) produced by the Reykjavik City Theatre and movements for the play Spítalaskipið at the Student Theatre of the Icelandic Academy of the Arts in 2005. Guðmundur received second prize at the Iceland Dance Company's choreographic competition in the fall of 1998 for his piece Le Devine and his piece Party which was choreographed for a Dance-theatre competition held by the Iceland Dance Company and the Reykjavik City Theatre, received the audience award. That piece was then developed further and taken into The Iceland Dance Company's repertoire in October 2003. Guðmundur choreographed the piece Time-space in spring 2008 for the Iceland Dance Company's choreographic workshop. Performances were held both at a deserted retail-space and at the Blue Lagoon.
In 2004 Guðmundur left the Iceland Dance Company and moved to New York to study at New York University - Tisch School of the Arts. He graduated from there in spring 2006 with a MFA degree in Dance. After graduation he stayed one year in New York and worked as a personal trainer at Equinox Gym in Greenwich Village amongst other things. Guðmundur taught at the Icelandic Ballet School 1993-2000 and again now from 2007-present, after moving back home from New York. He has also taught at private schools here in Reykjavik.
Besides his main job, the teaching, Guðmundur has served as a project manager for the Iceland Dance Company and works on various dance short films in his all to limited free-time. He's also the foreman of the Dancers devision at the Icelandic Actors Union.
